Recommended Loadout and Squad

This is the earliest Mission in the game to have a good amount of unique dialogue. Unique dialogue is when a specific Squad Mate (or pair of Squad Mates) will have lines that are, well, unique compared to the others. For example, bringing along Garrus will have a lot of this considering he and Wrex were in your team in the original Mass Effect.

  • If Wrex is the Krogan Leader, you'll get a some mileage by bringing Garrus along.
  • Liara will have some dialogue with Wrex as well, and will have more of her own if you also completed Lair of the Shadow Broker in Mass Effect 2.
  • Javik has some good comedic moments as well, if you have him.
  • You'll be facing shielded enemies in this level, so it's a good idea to mod one of your weapons with a Piercing Mod so that your shots will still damage them.

Mission Enemies

  • Assault Trooper
  • Guardian
  • Centurian
  • Combat Engineer
  • Turret
  • Atlas Mech

Travel to the Diplomatic Ships

To begin this Mission, head to the Annos Basin and cruise from the Mass Relay in the Pranas system to the small diplomatic ship fleet just West of the sun (we realise that cardinal directions don't really exist in space but you know what we mean). When you do, the diplomats decide to use the Normandy as neutral ground, and Shepard gets in their dress blues.

The meeting is held in the Briefing Room just outside the War Room, where Primarch Victus, the Salarian Dalatrass and the leader of the Krogan argue. The Krogan Leader will depend on your actions in Mass Effect 1 and will be the same person from Mass Effect 2. If you convinced Wrex to stand down on Virmire, he'll be the Krogan Leader. If he was killed, it'll be his brother Wreav.

Regardless, the Krogan Leader will demand a cure for the Genophage in exchange for fighting with the Turians, something the Dalatrass finds absurd. Here, you can pick "What's your concern?" followed by either "Your people miscalculated" for +2 Paragon Points or "You had to do it" for +2 Renegade Points. You can also pick the following responses as you go:

advertisement

  • "The krogan deserve a cure" and "You need allies" for +4 Paragon Points total.
  • "We don't have a choice" and "I don't care. I need this" for +4 Renegade Points total.

The Krogan Leader will then bring in evidence that the Salarians have some female Krogan who survived Maelon's experiments from Mass Effect 2, meaning a Genophage cure is much closer than anyone else had thought, and everyone except the Dalatrass moves out to extract them. As the Dalatrass protests, you can pull a Renegade Interrupt for +5 Renegade Points.

Krogan Airdrop

As you approach the facility, you'll have a chat with your Krogan Leader, who doesn't trust anything the Salarians say. Here, you can say "Be friendly" for +2 Paragon Points or the lower-right option (which varies depending on who the Krogan Leader is) for +2 Renegade Points.

Additionally, if you destroyed Maelon's data in Mass Effect 2, the Krogan Leader will bring it up, where you can respond with either "I was wrong to destroy data" for +2 Paragon Points or "I don't regret what I did" for +2 Renegade Points.

Unfortunately the STG Base has not been given permission to let you land yet, and the Krogan Leader decides to jump out onto the landing pad, getting them under the lasersights of the Salarian. After Shepard jumps down, Padok Wiks frantically arrives on the scene and asks you calm the Urdnot down. You have several responses you can make here for each Morality:

  • "We can work this out", "Stay here, Wrex/Wrev" and "And female krogan" for +6 Paragon Points total.
  • "You should apologize", "Or else?" and "Good place for a cover-up" for +6 Renegade Points total.

Meet with Padok Wiks

You'll now be tasked with talking to Padok Wiks to enter the facility, but there's a fair amount to do here on the balcony before you move on.

  • You can talk to Wrex under guard to catch up with him on various topics. He'll also have four ambient "exchanges" with his Salarian guards, although you need to be pretty far away to trigger the next one.
  • Major Kirrahe will be present here, if he survived Virmire in Mass Effect 1. Talk to him, and you'll gain his support as a War Asset regardless of the Dalatrass' actions.
  • If Kirrahe died, Lieutenant Tolan will be in his place, who'll be much colder towards Shepard.
  • Two unnamed Salarians at a control panel will discuss the war at large in two exchanges.
  • Two unnamed Salarians to the left of the elevator will discuss suspicious goings-ons inside the base in two exchanges.
  • Two unnamed Salarians up the stairs to the right of the elevator have one discussion, as does the nearby armed guard.
  • Near Padok Wiks is a Vista you can observe from the railing.
  • Padok Wiks will have two exchanges with another Salarian if you walk by.

Close to the Kodiak shuttle where you started will be a Salarian manning two Consoles, one of which you can interact with. You can try and Activate it a total of thirteen times: on the twelth time, you'll learn that it's apparently a Feces Analyzer.

To enter the elevator and get to the Female Krogan, you'll first need to talk with Padok Wiks nearby. Do so, and you can enter. Unfortunately, some activity is detected at the perimeter of the base, so there's now an added element of urgency.

advertisement

Inside the Facility itself, you'll meet the STG mole: either Mordin Solus if he survived Mass Effect 2, or Padok Wiks himself if Mordin is dead. Throughout this conversation you'll have many chances for Morality Points: Your total options are:

  • "You did your best", "To save the krogan" OR "You're the krogan's last hope", "[Reassure female krogan]" for +6 Paragon Points total.
  • "But I need the cure!" OR "Only the cure matters", "I need a barganing chip", "Mordin/Padok, she's valuable" for +6 Renegade Points total.

You'll now be tasked with getting the Female Krogan out of the base while defending her and your STG Doctor (either Mordin or Padok) from Cerberus.

Defend the Female Krogan

Quarantine Checkpoint 1

When you are returned full control of Shepard, turn around to face away from the containment cells so you can start looking for collectibles.

  • Assault Rifle Extended Barrel - To your right will be some short steps: head up them to find this mod on a shelving unit.
  • In the lab will be two Research Logs detailing the process of trying to keep the Krogan females alive. One is to the left of the Extended Barrel above, and the other is to the right of where you first regained control if you backtrack to that spot.

After accessing the elevator, a bomb will detonate inside the cab. Cross the room and use the other door, then head up the ladder and make a U-Turn to the right.

Here you'll begin you first fight with Cerberus in the level. The Assault Troopers are easy targets, especially in this area with a good deal of cover: you can hang back and snipe them easily. The Centurions are more trouble thanks to their irritating smokescreens.

  • Shotgun Blade Attachment - Pick up this Weapon Mod on a shelf along the right wall here, close to where you first arrived.
  • A Research Log can be found further along the right side of the first area with Cerberus enemies discusses the Yahg as a Salarian bio weapon.
  • Datapad - 2,500 Credits. On a corner couch to the left of the exit door. Small and easily missed!

When you go through the next green panel door a Yahg will burst out of a wall and take out two Assault Troopers. The way forward is now blocked by fire, so hop over the short wall on your left and then leap over the gap on your right to continue.

  • Shotgun Spare Ammo - Right in front of you after jumping across the gap.

advertisement

In the next area the Pod with the Female Krogan will stop and Cerberus enemies will attack it. A Pod Integrity meter will show the damage they inflict on it in real time: if it dips below three-quarters full, the Female Krogan will be coughing in the pod. You can stop the nearby Cerberus enemies form harming the pod by rushing them: this is where the high density of cover comes to their advantage by giving them good places to hide. Once they're all down, use the Quarantine Checkpoint 1 panel to move the Female upwards.

  • Datapad - 2,500 Credits. Across from the Quarantine Checkpoint 1 panel, on a thin walkway overlooking three containers that contain the dog-like Varren.

Quarantine Checkpoint 2

Head through the gap where the pod was and onto the planter, then use the View Prompt to see the Krogan Leader fly by in the Kodiak. Press onwards to the rear of the next area and a dropship will appear with more Cerberus enemies. The next area contains another Centurian and many more Troopers.

  • Pistol High Caliber Barrel - This is on the shelves on your left as you traverse the external area just after Checkpoint 1, close to a pair of lockers.

At the top of the stairs you will encounter two new enemy types, Combat Engineers and their deploy-able Turrets (unless you followed our guide in order and did From Ashes already). Overload and other Powers can reduce the blue shields, but fire-based Powers like Incinerate work best on the yellow Armor bars. If you don't fully take out a Turret however, an Engineer will repair it, so beware. The Turret's weapon fire is powerful too, so stay far away and behind cover while you attack.

If you're able to shoot the turret WHILE the Engineer is setting it up, it'll explode and take out a big chunk of their health!

  • Spare Parts - 3,750 Credits. A pile of boxes along the inside wall, directly across from where Kirrahe has hidden among the planters (if you have him).

The next door requires you to stand in front of it while a scanner scans you for a few seconds. Don't leave the beam or it will reset and the door won't open. Once it does you can travel through a blue hallway to the next area.

  • Medical Station - 75 XP. On the other side of the scanning door is a Medical Station on the left-hand wall.

The battleground on the other side of the corridor has two levels: the ground floor and an upper mezzanine-like floor. Direct your Squad Members to stay put on the first floor while you travel to the top. Clear it out and you may be able to drop down behind a pair of Guardians that appear armed with shields. Before leaving, return to the ground floor for some very awesome loot.

  • Armax Asenal Greaves - In the destroyed lab with two floors and the first Guardians, this is on a lab table on the bottom floor.
  • Sentry Interface - This is behind the ladder in the back of the same area.
  • Spare Parts - 3,750 Credits. On the cube container to the left of the Sentry Interface. You have to be pretty close in order to Salvage it.

After all the enemies are gone, head to the upper level and Bypass the door with the orange hologram on it to reach Quarantine Checkpoint 2. As you might expect, Cerberus is swarming this area, and you may notice the Pod Integrity meter has not been refilled refilled from last time, so it's very important to stop enemies from damaging it.

After clearing them, your STG Doctor says that Cerberus has cut the power and you need to restore it. Head to the furthest end of the balcony, which is lit in red, and dispose of the Cerberus Assault Troopers that show up. You can then Reactivate the Power Terminal. Return to the Quarantine Checkpoint and defend it a second time from reinforcements. Once they're dead, use Quarantine Checkpoint 2 to send the Female Krogan on her way.

Before moving on, be sure to sweep this area for some very nice loot, including two weapons!

  • Pistol Scope - On a desk in a red-lit office area close to Quarantine Checkpoint 2. You can also find a Research Terminal to listen to right next to it.
  • Medical Station - 75 XP. On a wall close to the Power Terminal you activated for your STG Doctor.
  • Scorpion - On the railing right next to the Power Terminal you activated for your STG Doctor. It's small so be sure not to miss it!
  • M-13 Raptor - Head for the exit door - right next to the entry door - and check the nearby couch next to the railing to find this weapon.

The Scorpion fires sticky grenades rather than normal bullets, which explode three seconds after hitting something, although it has very little ammo. The explosions have a good blast radius, the shots don't arc downwards, and if you fire them into the ground they'll act as proximity mines! Squad Mates in particular benefit from this weapon because of their accuracy and unlimited ammo.

The M-13 Raptor is a sniper rifle that is semi-automatic: it has low power, but you can fire it faster by rapidly pressing the right trigger. With a higher clip capacity than other sniper rifles, this means you're less punished for missing your shots.

Quarantine Checkpoint 3

A door adjacent to the one you entered here with will take you forwards. Once through, hop across the gap and climb up the ladder, and you'll be back on the rooftop where you initially started the level.

Two Centurians will rush you here while the other enemies take shots at the Female Krogan. Focus on the Centurians from the safety of cover above the area. Your Pod Integrity should hold out until you can get to the lesser enemies around the door. Throw everything you've got at them but SAVE YOUR GRENADES if you have them.

This is because an Atlas Mech will drop in, and it's a massive, dangerous enemy. A direct hit from its missile launchers will take your shields out completely. It does have a weak point, which is the yellow windshield in the middle protecting its driving. Later in the game you can hijack the mech, but the game won't allow you to do that here.

Stay in cover and only pop out when its safe, using the right powers to take out its Shields (blue) and then its Armor (yellow). Grenades are also very helpful. Use things like Overload and Disruptor Ammo to get through the Shield. After this you can turn to Incenerate, Warp, Warp Ammo, Armor Piercing Rounds and Incendiary Rounds to get through the tough Armor. As mentioned above, once you get it down to just armor, you can shatter the pod and then snipe the occupant if you wish. Deplete the yellow armor meter and the mech will fall.

Unfortunately, there are still plenty of enemies that remain for you to eliminate. They are merely Assault Troopers, but don't get cocky! The mission will end after they are all disposed of.

Back on the Normandy

After the Female Krogan displays that she can handle herself, you'll be talking with Admiral Hackett in the Vid Comm room. The Prothean Device has now been given an official name: the Crucible, and a hologram of its construction will now be displayed in the War Room's hologram terminal, showing you how much of it has been built.

Back in the Briefing Room, Victus is arguing with your Krogan Leader over the semantics of the deal, but the Krogan is insistent that the Krogan be cured before any of them set foot in a Turian battle. Mordin will then go over how quickly it will take to make the cure: Here, you can reply with "Do what you can, Mordin" for +2 Paragon Points or "This better be worth it" for +2 Renegade Points. Regardless, both the Krogan Leader and Primarch Victus will have sensitive matters they wish to discuss with you, making Shepard shake their head over the childishness of it all.

Talk with Primarch Victus in the War Room to learn that a ship with his son on-board was shot down over Tuchanka and needs assistance, giving you the Tuchanka: Turian Platoon Side Mission. You'll also have two new Investigate options: "Turian ship on Tuchanka" and "After the genophage cure", as well as a new response available when picking "Palaven situation".

Talk to the Krogan Leader to pick up the Attican Traverse: The Rachni Mission, which will be of huge interest to anyone who played the first Mass Effect. Also be sure to explore the Investigate options with your Krogan Leader.

In the Medical Lab, you can talk to your STG Doctor for a scene. Here, respond with either "He's trustworthy" for +2 Paragon Points or "Suspicion is healthy" for +2 Renegade Points. You can also talk to Eve, the Krogan Female. Also make sure to exit the room, Quick Save, load, and then re-enter the Med Bay for a second walk-in conversation that is an amusing and logical outcome of the first one.

At this point, you'll have a lot of people aboard the Normandy to talk to after Missions. In the interest of brevity, we assume you visit each character expecting not to interrupt any walk-in conversations, then talk with each character until they give no new dialouge.

  • CIC: talk to Traynor for N7: Cerberus Attack Side Mission, Joker, EDI (+2 Reputation), and check your Private Terminal.
  • Crew Deck: talk to Engineer Adams and Dr. Chakwas in the Crew Quarters room, Liara and Garrus.
  • Engineering: talk to Javik, Gabby (if you got the FBA Couplings in Mass Effect 2), and Diana Allers (+5 Reputation).
  • Cargo Bay: talk to Cortez and James

Kelly Excursion

If Kelly Chambers survived Mass Effect 2 and you convinced her to change her identity during your last visit to the Citadel, you'll want to briefly pop by her to see her new look. The reason for this is because you otherwise would miss out on a scene that will get overridden by future story events.

Up Next: Citadel Excursion 2
